Greetings 6th grade Parents/Guardians,
Spinal screenings will be conducted at Wallace Middle School April 16-18, 2018. The purpose of a spinal screening is to detect signs of abnormal spinal curvature in the earliest stages and to determine if the need for treatment is necessary.
Scoliosis is a common abnormality found in adolescents and detected between the ages of 10 and 14; it is a sideways twisting of the spine. Kyphosis is an exaggerated rounding of the upper back and is often confused with poor posture; it is sometimes referred to as “round back.” Many cases of curvature of the spine are mild and worsen over time as the child grows and may require treatment such as bracing and surgery. Early treatment can prevent the development of a severe deformity, which can affect an individual’s appearance and health.
The screening procedure is simple. Nurses are specially trained and will look at your child’s back while he or she stands and then bends forward. The screening will take place during your child’s regularly scheduled 6th grade PE hour. BOYS AND GIRLS WILL BE SEEN SEPARATELY AND INDIVIDUALLY.
Boys will need to wear regular shorts/pants and remove their shirts. Girls are required to wear a sports bra and shorts/pants.
Parents and/or Guardians will be notified of results ONLY if medical follow up is necessary. Screening is required for grades 6 and 9 by the Texas Department of State Health Services. If, for any reason, you do not want your child to be screened, you will need to submit a medical affidavit from a physician citing that your child has been screened or is being followed by a physician for the above mentioned conditions.
Please feel free to contact me with questions.
