High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is the fastest and most effective way to lose fat and can also help build muscle! Research has demonstrated that properly implemented HIIT cardio is seven times more effective at burning fat than typical cardio. It is also been shown to be better for maintaining muscle while dieting, and can even help build muscle.
High intensity interval training can be difficult to master. How fast are you supposed to go on the intervals? How long should a HIIT cardio session last? What type of cardio equipment is best to use for HIIT? Is it safe? These are some common questions that many people wonder when attempting to use this type of cardio program. You will learn all of this from your session to ensure you perform the exercise optimally for fat burning and safely.
There has been a lot of scientific research done on high intensity cardio, and it has shown much better results when compared to a typical low intensity, longer duration cardio workout. A study done at Laval University showed that a group using HIIT dropped significantly more bodyfat than a group using steady state cardio, despite the fact that the steady state group exercised longer and burned 15,000 more calories during the exercise. Another study showed HIIT caused a extra 2% decrease in bodyfat over 8 weeks when compared to a typical steady state cardio program. A 3rd study done at Baylor College of Medicine showed HIIT increased metabolism for 24 hours following the HIIT session.
My name is Chris "Protein" Leach and I have helped many people lose fat and even build muscle with this exact type of training. It is the same type of cardio I performed during my preparation for the 2012 Lackland Classic Physique Competition where I won the overall championship in the men's physique division. During my preparation for the contest I lost 30 lbs and dropped 12% bodyfat.
Elizabeth Morgan, NPC Bikini Competitor and bb.com transformation of the week winner also performed this type of cardio for her contest preparation, and lost 30 lbs and dropped 15% bodyfat! Many other fitness models and competitors use high intensity cardio to get lean quickly for photoshoots and competitions. Clearly, the scientific and the anecdotal evidence are both in favor of high intensity cardio!
Is it safe?
Yes! When properly performed HIIT cardio actually has lower injury rates than longer, lower intensity types of cardio. It is also very effective at increasing cardiovascular health.
